What is our mission? The Environmental Brigade’s mission is to empower students to promote sustainable solutions to environmental problems in rural communities in Panama in order to reverse degradation and preserve the natural environment. This is done through 8-day trips in which students work alongside community members of the Darien Panamanian Province.
Volunteers work in a variety of landscapes, ranging from rainforests to urban beaches, each presenting different challenges for the survival of native species and future generations. Projects include building greenhouses, implementing waste management and recycling systems, rainforest reforestation and preservation, and organic agricultural practices. Sustainability is an extremely important aspect of Global Environmental Brigades. Each trip builds on the other, year after year, by continuing projects through successive phases and collaboration with other participating universities. Global Brigades employs environmental technicians to support community members in our absence. This complements the other GB chapters at IU that work in Panama: Business, Dental, Human Rights, and Medical. |
